IELTS is an exam for people who want to use English for a specific purpose. For example, if you want to study at an English-speaking university, you should do the IELTS academic test. If you want to immigrate to countries such as Canada or Australia, you should do the IELTS general test. With the academic course, you'll develop the skills you need to write academic essays, read academic papers and follow lectures and presentations. With the general course, you'll develop the skills you need to live and work in an English-speaking country. Some people choose to do an IELTS course because they want an English qualification on their CV that's different to the FCE or the CAE. Most people do the IELTS because they want to attend a university or college in an English-speaking country or because they need it for a work visa application. One great thing about the IELTS test is that you can't fail it. It's what's called a "thermometer test". Obviously, if you want to immigrate to an English-speaking country or do a third level course in one, you're going to need to be a band score of between 5 and 7, depending on the visa you are applying for. Nursing degree courses require you to have a Band Score of 5.5. Law degrees require a band score of between 6.5 and 7. Whatever your purpose in doing an IELTS course you can be sure that you will improve in your four core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing :)

In less than a minute I'm going to tell you why it's a good idea to do an FCE course. But first, can you answer a couple of questions? How did you do?
